Los Gatos - A European Farmhouse (2002)
This project is perhaps most notable for what is not there.  You see no perennial borders, no clipped hedges, and very few showy exotics. Our job was to blend the older stonewall remnants of the original property with a new, more professional landscape, without in any way detracting from the quite beauty of the site.

This is a very large property by California standards, located in the Hills above Los Gatos. The owners purchased it not only to create a sanctuary from their busy lives as corporate executives, but as a preserve for the rich assortment of native and exotic specimen trees that had been growing for generations on this former apple farm. We chose to add new stonewalls around the front and back of the house to create more level access from the house to the open land. Our landscape contractor was able to seamlessly blend the old walls with our new ones- a difficult task that they brought off impeccably. Even the new water "troughs," front and back, are already impossible to date after just a year’s worth of aging. Scattered seemingly randomly around the walls and levels are a collection of carved stone architectural ornaments the clients purchased in their travels through Europe.

We hope to continue working on this project for years if all goes well. In the offing are a swimming pool and sculpture terrace. Stay tuned.
