Sunset Idea House 2002
"Updating" the American Craftsman Style

Welcome to the 2002 Idea House! This year’s Idea House is a 1904 Craftsman that was relocated from a nearby street, placed on a dug out basement (thereby creating a whole new floor), and completely renovated. Our given task was to update the craftsman style in order to create a home for contemporary Western living with a sense of the past.

The Idea House is collaboration between the Sunset publications staff, the project developer’s team, the chosen designers, and the product sponsors. We would like to thank Sunset for choosing us as the landscape design team, and most especially thanks to LMNO ARTS who went above and beyond for this project. The metal and wood arbor, all of the craftsman style hardware, the rusted metal plant containers, and the welded metal fountain piece were all made by them. Award winning landscape architect Michael Bliss, the most recent addition to the Gardenart team (we are now GardenartGroup.com) spent countless hours doing our construction drawings, as well as the color illustration that was printed in the magazine.

A final big "thank you" to our landscape contractor, Sam Gomez, who brought the project in on time, on budget, and on target. Thanks Sam for the wonderful installation!
