After completing their new living room, this San Mateo couple needed a new look for their garden as well. Originally, a Hawthorne tree right outside the doors blocked the garden view. After much soul searching, we proceeded to open the space by removing the tree. We then created a playful paving that mimics the shape of natural flagstone.
 
The grass-like lawn substitute is a western native plant called Carex Panza, or California meadow grass. It can be mown occasionally to keep it neat and lawn like, or it can be allowed to become a soft, natural looking green meadow.
